Obtaining a NJ Permit for a 16 year old
As with any driver, before being able to drive, a 16 year old must first obtain a NJ driver's Permit issued by the NEW JERSEY DMV (MVC). By law, the 16 year old learner's permit may only be obtained through a NJ state certified driving school. This is done in one of two ways. The first way is the student will take a test in school (not all New Jersey schools offer this program), and if they pass, they will simply go with a driving school to the DMV to get the permit (the high school is not authorized to issue the actual permit). The second method of obtaining a New Jersey permit for a 16 year old is in a situation where the student has not taken the written permit test in school, (or simply did not pass the exam given in school). In such an instance, they may go take the written permit test at the DMV (MVC), and they too may only go with a NJ state certified driving school. The written permit test consists of 50 multiple choice questions. The student must get 40 out of 50 right in order to pass. Please see our sample NJ DMV (MVC) written permit test. When going to the DMV to obtain a permit, the student should bring the following:
  • 6 points of state approved I.D. (such as an original, state issued birth certificate, or passport, Social security card, marriage certificate etc.) and proof of address
  • $10 (the DMV charges $10 for the permit)
  • If the student has passed the exam in school: bring the "blue card" or "score card". This is a card issued by the high school, which states that the student has passed the test.
  • a "green card" application card which will be given to you by the driving school
  • contacts or glasses, as the DMV will give an eye exam before issuing a permit

After obtaining the permit, the student will receive 6 hours of behind the wheel training (required by law). This is done in one of our school vehicles, all of which are equipped with a dual brake system. The 6 hours are full hours, and we do not include the trip to the DMV as part of the hours. Upon request, at completion of the program, we will issue a certificate of completion of the 6 hour program- free of charge. This certificate is available to anyone who has completed our 6 hour program, regardless of age. Often, this certificate will help lower your auto insurance rates by a significant degree.

After finishing the 6 hour program, the permit is brought back to the DMV (MVC) to validate it, and to assign the student a road test date. When you are ready to take your road test, we offer a road test service which provides you with transportation to your road test in the vehicle in which you had been given lessons.

Our services are door to door. This means that we will pick you up from work, home, or your office, provided that your location is within the perimiter of our service.
